Wilco moves into third overall at Giro d’Italia

Team Sunweb’s Giro d’Italia general classification hopes are on track after stage five, with Wilco finishing fourth on the stage and moving up in to third place overall.

After 185 kilometres of racing, the team set the tempo on the front of the peloton as the race hit the final climb of the day – the Valico di Montescuro, a 22 kilometre climb at 5.7 percent. Over the top of the ascent and in wet, dark and foggy conditions, Wilco, Jai Hindley and Sam Oomen remained together in a reduced front group with 12 kilometres left to race. The trio stayed together down a fast descent and then regrouped in readiness for the final push to the line.

With the stage win out of contention – as Filippo Ganna survived the day’s breakaway –  the leading chase group raced amongst themselves to secure any bonus seconds they could on the line.

“It was a long and hard day,” said Wilco. “The boys brought me and Jai perfectly into the last climb, we always could take control. It was a tricky final with a wet decent. I tried to sprint for the bonus seconds and managed to get 4th. I felt good throughout the day and we showed that we are really strong as a team.”
